ALOPECIA

Alopecia is an autoimmune condition that results in hair loss, and the autoimmune reaction appears to be the immune system's mistaken attack on its own hair follicles, the tiny cup shaped structures from which hairs grow. Hair can be lost from any part of the body. While alopecia doesn't usually involve any specific medical or disease symptoms, the loss of hair can make it a particularly stressful and upsetting condition for sufferers, who are
predominantly women and young people.

With alopecia, hair loss may be in small, round, patches on the scalp, about the size of a quarter
-- known as alopecia areata. In many cases, the disease does not extend beyond a few bare
patches.

ALOPECIA TOTALIS:

If it involve the loss of all facial and scalp hair – it is alopecia totalis.

ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS:

Alopecia universalis is the loss of all body hair (head, face and body).

Although the exact cause for alopecia is not known, it's thought, however, that some environmental, viral or genetic triggers or exposure predisposes some people to Alopecia causing immune system to attack hair follicles. That is deranged immune system.

In alopecia areata, immune system cells called white blood cells attack the rapidly growing cells in the hair
follicles that make the hair. The affected hair follicles become small and drastically slow down hair production. Fortunately, the stem cells that continually supply the follicle with new cells do not seem to be targeted. So
the follicle always has the potential to regrow hair.

Mrs. SR visited my clinic with a recently developed bald patch (approximately 1 inch in diameter). No signs of
inflammation, itching or eruption of the scalp. No signs of new hairs coming from that spot. She observed the spot accidentally when she was combing her hair.
